For centuries, Rhodiola has been used in
traditional medicine of Russia, Scandinavia and other northern European
countries. Since1969, Rhodiola rosea has been included in official
Russian medicine. In 1975 it was approved by the Soviet Ministry
of Health as a medicine and tonic to be used as a stimulant for
fatigue, depression, anemia, impotence, gastrointestinal ailments,
infections and nervous system disorders. In Sweden, Rhodiola was
recognized as an Herbal Medicinal Product in 1985, described as
an ‘antifatigue agent’ and ‘as a plant with stimulant
action.’ It is an adaptogen with various health-promoting
effects such as increasing physical endurance, work productivity,
longevity, resistance to high altitude sickness, and to treat fatigue.
Registered liquid extracts in Scandinavian countries are used extensively
to increase mental work capacity during stress and as a general
strengthener.
