Hawthorn: Crataegus oxyacantha

Hawthorn is considered the natural cardiac tonic, used for tachycardia & hypertension. As well as its use as a cardiac tonic, Hawthorn is antispasmodic and febrifuge. It is indicated for use in palpitations, angina, vascular spasm, arythmia and as a heart stimulant. Hawthorn has a combination of paradoxical but valuable effects on the coronary circulation and on the heart muscle. It is vasodilatory – meaning some of the active constituents have a specific action on the coronary circulation. It normalizes blood pressure by regulating heart action. As well, some active constituents have a sedative effect thereby slowing down the heart, while other active constituents of the whole plant stimulate the pulse rate slightly. Since Hawthorn was approved by the German Commission E in 1994, Hawthorn extract has been shown to be an effective and safe treatment for congestive heart failure.
