Oregon Grape is native from the Pacific Coast
to Alberta and south to New Mexico. It has a long history of
uses
by indigenous peoples as a tonic for stomach troubles and as
a restorative for the liver. Oregon grape contains alkaloids,
including berberine
and hydrastsine, which are also found in goldenseal, coptis and
barberry. These alkaloids are strong antiseptics and are thought
to reduce the severity of psoriasis. Oregon grape is an anti-inflammatory
with decongestant actions and is used for gastritis and general
digestive weakness, to stimulate gall bladder function and to
reduce congestion. It is primarily a restorative remedy that
stimulates
the flow of bile and supports the function of the gall bladder.
It was also used for internal hemorrhages, eye washes, gargles
for
throats and to treat tuberculosis. Oregon grape excels in treating
eczema and psoriasis through it’s action on liver congestion
and stagnation.
