A native North American wildflower, Goldenseal
thrives in shady, moist areas under the canopy of hardwood forest.
The roots and rhizomes of Goldenseal contain a number of alkaloids
which are astringent, diuretic and antiseptic. It acts primarily
on the mucous membranes (moist surfaces that line the respiratory
and digestive systems). When taken in combination with Echinacea,
Goldenseal acts to dry inflamed mucus membranes and lessen the effects
of the cold virus. Goldenseal was used by indigenous peoples of
North America to treat ulcerations of the mouth and throat, for
diarrhea and gastric irritation. It is considered by herbalists
to be the best of the ‘bitter tonics’, sharpening the
appetite and promoting digestion. It is highly effective in easing
constipation and at stopping sickness and vomiting.
